What is Structural Design? What is its significance in Construction?

Structural design is a discipline in Engineering that deals with the methodical investigation of the stability, strength and rigidity of structures/buildings focusing on their safety & durability. Structural designers perform structural analysis and apply scientific methods in designing buildings that can withstand different loads/forces that they may witness in the lifespan including the various forces of nature like earthquakes, cyclones and other stresses. The main motive behind structural analysis and design is to develop structures that withstand all applied loads for the duration of their intended existence. Structural Engineer analyses the Magnitude of all the forces acting on the structure, and the Direction in which they act for example weight of rainfall, heavy snowfall, or hailstorm would act in the direction of gravity/downwards, whilst wind forces would act against the sides and finally the Location if the expected forces on individual members.

Let’s understand the significance of Structural Designs:

  1. Structural Safety & Material Selection: Structural designing provides all the crucial information about footings, columns, beams, walls, floors, roofs, material quality, and more to ensure that the structure is built to be safe and sound.
  2. Efficiency and Cost-Effectivity: Structural designing is also associated with ensuring the efficient use of construction materials and resources. Structural Engineers determine the optimal material grade of materials to ensure the safety and operational use of the structures without any unnecessary expenditure.
  3. Ensure Your Home is Up to Code: Structural Engineer ensures that the structure meets all local codes and ordinances for safety and materials. Here in India, we refer to the IS codes for the design of Structures.
